Each neutron contains three quarks as shown in the diagram below. Hence neutrons have masses but are electrically neutral in nature. The neutron is made of two Down and one Up quark.
Note also that the neutron is made of charges that add to zero but move internally producing its well-known magnetic moment. While the size of protons and neutrons is of the order of a Fermi 1015 m the size of quarks is 1018 m. Two of the quarks are called down quarks d and the third quark is called an up quark u.
Other scientists began searching for evidence of quarks and succeeded later in 1968. The quarks of the neutron are held together by gluons the exchange particles for the strong nuclear force. Despite the belief that the proton consists of three quarks the following observations have been made in electron capture and beta decay.
